A little while ago, I had the pleasure of sitting down with VoyageBaltimore to share my story, inspirations, and the journey that led me to where I am today. Here’s a closer look at that conversation.
Hi Ruby, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into fashion began at a very young age. As a child, I was always fascinated by clothing-how fabrics, colors, and textures could come together to create something beautiful and expressive. That early curiosity eventually grew into a deep passion for design and craftsmanship.
In 2009, I graduated from fashion school, where I honed my technical skills and gained a strong foundation in garment construction and design. Fueled by that passion and a desire to build something of my own, I went on to launch Rubies Clothing in 2011. Since then, I have continued to combine my formal training with creativity, hands-on experience, and a commitment to staying up to date with evolving fashion trends, which has helped me remain relevant and consistent in the industry.
Today, Rubies Clothing specializes in creating and tailoring garments for all occasions, including prom dresses, bridal and wedding gowns, birthday outfits, menswear, and alterations. At the heart of my work is the goal of helping each client feel confident, celebrated, and uniquely themselves through well-crafted, thoughtfully designed pieces.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While the journey has been rewarding, it hasn’t always been smooth. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges along the way, including managing different client personalities, meeting diverse design requirements, and handling last-minute changes under tight timelines. Balancing client expectations with budgets and keeping up with evolving industry trends has also been an ongoing learning process.
In addition to the creative side, managing a team and working with people from diverse backgrounds and nationalities has required patience, clear communication, and adaptability. Sewing and design are a joy for me, but they also demand discipline and understanding. Each challenge has helped me grow stronger, sharpen my skills, and become a better designer and business owner.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a fashion designer and master tailor, and the founder of Rubies Clothing. I specialize in custom garments and high-quality alterations for all occasions, including prom dresses, bridal and wedding gowns, birthday outfits, and menswear. I’m known for my attention to detail, precise fit, and the ability to bring a client’s vision to life.
I’m most proud of the trust my clients place in me. Rubies Clothing currently has 5-star reviews from over 100 satisfied clients. Seeing clients feel confident and beautiful in pieces created specifically for them is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my hands-on approach and versatility. I combine formal fashion training with years of experience and a deep understanding of fabric, body types, and individual style to deliver designs that reflect each client’s unique personality.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe patience is the quality that has contributed most to my success. Fashion design and tailoring require attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to work closely with clients who each have unique tastes and expectations. Patience allows me to listen, understand, and collaborate effectively, ensuring every garment is crafted with precision and care. It also helps me navigate challenges, from last-minute changes to tight deadlines, while maintaining the high standards my clients expect.
